Design and Modeling
Design and Modeling is a class made to break the mold of "the box" for sixth graders. Students start the nine weeks with a problem; creating a foot orthosis for a patient with Cerebral Palsy. They are given limited materials/a budget, and also criteria they must follow. Students will then present the solution when the lesson is over. Then, they move into actual measuring, how to draw technical sketches and use a scale and triangle. Periodically, problems are presented to the students and they must solve them, for example a paper tower using only limited materials. Students then use techniques to draw multi view sketches and isometric drawings and once they have mastered those techniques, use an industry utilized software called AutoDesk Inventor.
Inventor is a three-dimensional mechanical drawing software that is currently used in industry by engineers, architects and designers. Project Lead The Way has rights to this software and it is amazing to see what sixth graders can actually do with it. On occasion, students will be able to send a file to the instructors page and get something 3D printed from our MakerBot 3D Printer. This class brings design and modeling to life for our students.
