Energy and the Environment
Energy and the Environment is a class that teaches students to explore information and research based off of science and factual information. In this class, we question the truth behind climate change and global warming, looking at the physical evidence we have collected through ice cores, weather patterns, and greenhouse gas PPM changes in our atmosphere. We explore the changing terrain on land through receding glacial ice, the melting of ice caps, receding snow cover, and also ecosystems around the world affected by these changes. In this class, students learn about sustainable practices to save money and to also produce clean energy.
Students who are in this class receive training on shop equipment such as band saws and scroll saws and also how to use hand tools like rasps, abrasive paper, box cutters, soldering irons and hot glue guns. Through using these tools, students are able to create wind turbine blades and compete against one another on which will catch the most amount of air and spin a generator the fastest! Students will also learn about circuits and gain skills that they may be able to take home and work on projects or fix household appliances.
